HOLLY CLASS 2023 - 2024

Welcome to Year Five!

Holly class is taught by Mrs McManus with support from Miss Brierley. Mrs Belding teaches the class on Wednesdays. PE is taught by Mr Grooms each Tuesday and Wednesday but additional opportunities may often arise so please make sure that your child has their PE kit in school each day.

I am passionate about children being emotionally invested in their learning and I strive to achieve this across all curriculum areas. I also believe strongly in the many benefits that musical tuition has for children. Upper KS2 is an exciting year as the children begin their musical instrument tuition for the next two years. We are so fortunate to have a specialist music teacher, Mrs Thomas, teaching music lessons and with dedication and patience, your child has the chance to become a talented musician! The children will need to bring their clarinets to school every Tuesday.

Throughout the autumn term, we will be discovering what life was like in ancient Rome and how the Romans made a lasting impact. We will also link our studies to the local area of Chester and find out why it was so important during the Roman period. Our geography learning will look into the spread of the Roman empire but we will also find out about interesting physical features of our Earth such as volcanoes and tectonic plates.

In the spring term, we will be delving into animal conservation. As part of this unit of study, we will visit Chester Zoo to find out more about how we can save endangered animals with a particular focus on the illegal wildlife trade. We aim for the children to feel empowered to be able to raise awareness and make a difference.

In the summer term, we will be focusing on the technological advances made in the twentieth century and will learn about the Space Race between the USA and USSR.

The ‘Meet the Teacher’ presentation from September and the long-term curriculum overview are below for your information. I am very much looking forward to working in partnership with you to support your child throughout the year and promote a real and lasting love for learning. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
