Special Educational Needs and Disability

At Childer Thornton Primary School we uphold the highest commitment to supporting, challenging and nurturing all children to enable them to achieve at school.  This is achieved through Quality First teaching in the classroom. We believe early intervention is vital in order to identify barriers to learning, and to provide the right support so that every pupil can achieve the best they possibly can.

In some cases it may benefit our children to access further help and support in a specific way. If there is a need for a child to have access to specific styles of learning and support, to remove a barrier to learning, this will be done through a graduated approach. This will be initiated by the class teacher, and supported by our trained SEND Team. We will endeavour to work in close partnership with parents at every juncture and strive towards achieving an excellent team around the child.

Our SEND co-ordinator is Mrs S Raynor who has achieved the National SENCO award and is working towards a Masters qualification in Inclusion with a specific focus on dyslexia.

Our deputy SEND co-ordinator is Mrs J Powell, who is also our Learning Mentor and has a wealth of experience in supporting children with a wide range of emotional and social issues, such as attachment, bereavement, nurture, mental health.

SEND local area inspection fact sheet for parent carers

The Information Advice and Support Service has produced a fact sheet for parents and  carers about the Local Area Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) Inspection. It is important for parents and carers to know about the inspection as Ofsted and CQC will want to hear from families about what differences the reforms have made to their lives  The fact sheet gives details about the inspection process and how you can become involved.  Please click here for the link on the Local Offer to the fact sheet. Please do get in touch if you would like hard copies.

Additionally, here are some links to films about Local Area SEND inspections that may be helpful when raising awareness of the inspection to children and young people:
