Learning Mentor

Role of the Learning Mentor at Childer Thornton (by Mrs Powell)

At Childer Thornton we believe passionately that children can’t begin to learn unless they are feeling happy and secure within themselves and both their school and home environment.

One of my favourite aspects of my job is my role as Learning Mentor in the school.  Each week I meet with a range of our children who just need a bit of extra support.  This could be for the following reasons:

  • They are experiencing a family break up or a change in their home life
  • They have had a bereavement in the family
  • They have developed  a fear or phobia at home or are generally anxious
  • Maybe they have just seemed not quite themselves and we (parents and school) don’t know why
  • Building resilience
  • Friendship issues
  • Nervous about transitions
  • They find expressing and articulating their emotions a challenge.

What do I do?

  • Listen and give them time to talk about how they are feeling in a relaxed environment (over a drink and a biscuit!)
  • Reassure them and provide an extra contact in school
  • Liaise very closely with home so we can support the issue together
  • Seek outside agency support if both parents and child feel it is necessary
  • Role-play situations to help with social skills.

What do the children think?

“I like it when we eat biscuits and talk together”

“I know what to do when I am sad, I like the fact you check up on me, I don’t get sad as much anymore”

If you feel your child needs support please contact Mrs Powell at school.
