Diversity in the Curriculum

CHILDER THORNTON PRIMARY SCHOOL

CHALLENGING ASSUMPTIONS ABOUT DIVERSITY 2016/17.

We are aware that our small, semi-rural Primary school consists predominantly of white British pupils. Their day-to-day experiences do not expose them to a very broad cultural background. One of our areas for improvement is to help children learn more about the customs and beliefs of the many different communities in our own country and to develop the core values of acceptance and respect. Conversations with and between children demonstrate a lack of awareness of diversity at times – we want to change this and to challenge stereotypical views.

At Childer Thornton therefore, diversity is celebrated throughout as many curriculum areas as possible and we are constantly seeking opportunities to extend this further. Our aim is to provide as many opportunities as possible in order for our children to widen and enrich their understanding and acceptance of different cultures.

KS2: ‘Think and Drink’ 5 mins daily discussion/reflection using the Guardian’s Eye Witness picture of the day

Young Voices:  Our School Choir performs annually where they learn, perform and listen to a diverse range of musicians. They also perform at the local care home

Cheshire West & Chester RE Conference: A group of children represent school every year where they participate in Hindu dance, Islam workshops & a range of diverse workshops.

Inter-faith Week: Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Hinduism, Humanism, and Baha’ism.

Walk in her Shoes’: raising awareness and funds to help improve access to water for girls and women, giving them the chance to get an education or to work, and to fulfill their potential.Whole school participation

Rights Respecting Schools Award

We are delighted to inform you that we are working with Unicef to become a Rights Respecting School (https://www.unicef.org.uk/what-we-do/education/ ) This is a whole-school approach where the children will learn about their  rights and how important it is to respect everyone’s rights. It is taken from The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). Miss Katie Smith is our Lead Teacher on this project.
