Willow 2016 - 2017

Mrs McManus

We are a class of lively and enthusiastic learners taught by Mrs McManus. We are keen to learn about the world and share our thoughts and ideas with each other. Mrs McManus loves to read us stories and poems as we are such good listeners and they often spark interesting discussions amongst us. We are also fantastic performers and really enjoy drama activities and singing, both of which feature heavily in our classroom.  We are also brilliant problem solvers and really get stuck in with our maths challenges. We are naturally curious and ask lots of questions about the things we are learning about and the world in general.

We will learn about some exciting topics this year starting with ‘Transport Through Time' in the autumn term. The children will be discovering what life was like aboard the Titanic, learning about the first aeroplane flight and looking at how transport has changed over the ages. We will be learning about significant people such as George Stephenson and the Wright Brothers. As part of their geography and history work, the children will enjoy a learning experience at Liverpool Maritime Museum and the Museum of Liverpool.

During the spring term our focus will be ‘Destination: Outer Space.’ We will be visited by a spaceman, learn about the first moon landings, look at views from outer space to name and locate the world’s continents and oceans, and find out about the lives of Neil Armstrong, Helen Sharman and Tim Peake. Much of our English learning will be around the texts ‘Toys in Space’ and ‘Traction Man’ by Mini Grey.

Finally in the summer term our topic is ‘If you go down to the woods today…’ As part of this exciting topic we go on our residential visit to Delamere Forest. We will be looking at the geographical similarities and differences between Delamere Forest and the rainforest in Australia. We will look at the artwork by Andy Goldsworthy and use this to inspire our own forest art. Traditional tales will be a focus for our reading and writing, including some with a modern twist!

Some of our targets for this year are:

·         To count, read and write all numbers to a hundred

·         To develop our strategies for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division

·         To be able to quickly recall our times tables facts for the 2, 5 and 10 times tables

·         To compare and sort 2D and 3D shapes

·         To solve problems involving money and length

·         To use punctuation (full stops, exclamation marks, question marks and commas to separate items in a list) correctly within our independent writing

·         To use capital letters in the correct places

·         To use conjunctions and pronouns to extend and link sentences

·         To re-read our own work to check it makes sense

·         To write meaningful narratives selecting appropriate vocabulary and sentences that begin to show an awareness of the reader

Thank you for all your support with your child's learning.
