Mrs McManus

 Welcome to Year 2!

Willow Class, taught by Mrs McManus, is full of imaginative and enthusiastic learners who are keen to learn about the world and share their thoughts and ideas with each other.

In Year 2 we hope to spark your natural curiosity and encourage you to take part in discussions and ask lots of questions. We do lots of hands-on learning and love to include lots of drama and music in our lessons. The children in Year 2 have many opportunities to become brilliant problem solvers and really get stuck in to some interesting maths challenges.

We will learn about some exciting topics this year starting with ‘Transport Through Time' in the autumn term. As part of this we will discover what life was like aboard the Titanic, learn about the first aeroplane flight and look at how transport has changed people's lives over the years. We will be learning about significant people such as George Stephenson and the Wright Brothers. As part of our geography and history work, we will enjoy a fantastic learning experience at Liverpool Maritime Museum and the Museum of Liverpool.

In the spring term our focus will be ‘Destination: Outer Space.’ During this, we will be visited by a spaceman! How exciting! We will learn about the first moon landings; look at views from outer space to name and locate the world’s continents and oceans; and find out about the lives of Neil Armstrong, Helen Sharman and Tim Peake. Much of our English learning will be around the texts ‘Toys in Space’ and ‘Traction Man’ by Mini Grey.

Finally, in the summer term, our topic is ‘If you go down to the woods today…’ As part of this exciting topic we'll go on our residential visit to Delamere Forest. We will be looking at the geographical similarities and differences between Delamere Forest and Daintree Rainforest in Australia. We will lalso ook at the artwork by Andy Goldsworthy and use this to inspire our own forest art. Traditional tales will be a focus for our reading and writing, including some with a fabulous modern twist!

Some of our maths targets for this year are:

  • ·         To count, read and write all numbers to a hundred
  • ·         To develop our mental and written strategies for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
  • ·         To be able to quickly recall our times tables facts for the 2, 5 and 10 times tables
  •           To recognise, find, name and write simple fractions of a length, shape, set of objects or number
  • ·         To compare and sort 2D and 3D shapes
  • ·         To solve problems involving money and length
  •            To tell the time to the nearest 5 minutes

Some of our writing targets are:

  • To use punctuation (full stops, exclamation marks, question marks and commas to separate items in a list) correctly within our independent writing
  • To use capital letters in the correct places
  • To use conjunctions and pronouns to extend and link sentences
  • To include adjectives and adverbs in our writing to make it more interesting
  • To use a range of sentence types (statements, questions, commands and exclamations)
  • To re-read our own work to check it makes sense
  •  To write meaningful narratives selecting appropriate vocabulary and sentences that begin to show an awareness of the reader

Some of our reading targets are:

  • To decode unfamiliar words using blending as the prime approach
  • To accurately read words of two or more syllables
  • To begin to read accurately and fluently without needing to overtly sound out words
  • During reading to check that the text makes sense and correct inaccurate reading
  • To discuss the sequence of events and predict what might happen next, giving reasons why we think that
  • To make inferences on the basis of what is being said or done
  • To talk about and infer what characters might be thinking or feeling and what their motivations might be, using clues in the text to explain answers
  • To compare different stories and characters and discuss similarities and differences between them.

The best way to help your child succeed and achieve their potential is by reading with them as often as possible, sharing stories and discussing books.

PE will be taught by coaches from Premier Sports on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons but extra opportunities may arise so please make sure your child has their PE kit in school all week.

Thank you for all your support with your child's learning. Please don't hesitate to get in touch if you have any queries.
