Chestnut 2017 - 2018

Mrs Yarranton

Mrs Yarranton

Welcome back! We hope our new Year 6s are ready for the exciting year ahead!

The class will be taught by two teachers across the week: Mrs Yarranton from Monday to Thursday, and Mrs Williams on a Friday.

We begin each morning with ‘Wake up, Shake up!’ to get our energy levels up before we settle down to some serious work.

Our topics this year begin with South America in the autumn term. We will be looking at environmental issues, such as the destruction of the rainforest and animals that are endangered. We will also be studying the geography of South America. Charles Darwin’s voyages around the area will also be a focus as we find out about evolution.

In the spring term, we are off to the movies where we use film as a stimulus for many aspects of the curriculum and to help us as we revise for our SATs.

During the summer term, we will find out about the Mayans. After the SATs are over we will finish with our school play (details of which are a closely guarded secret!)

Our extra responsibilities include Environment Officers, Junior Safety Officers and we are also valued buddies for the children in Reception. Another role that some of us have is as a Play Leader, which consists of us setting up activities during play and lunchtimes to encourage the younger children to develop their multi-skills.

We are lucky enough to have some specialist teachers throughout the week. On Thursday, Mr Barry and Mr Mallon teach us music, and we are also taught Spanish by Mrs Lewis. On Friday afternoons we have PE (delivered by Premier Sports) which we alternate with science (delivered by our own specialist, Miss Silcox).

In the autumn term, we go on a trip to Chester Zoo where we learn aboult evolution, variation and adaptation to link in with our science topics. Later in the year, during the summer term, we go on our residential to the Conwy Centre where we will take part in all kinds of exciting activities such as rock climbing, canoeing and nightline.

This is an important year for us, so we will do lots of activities across the year to help us be responsible and make the right choices, help us with our transition to high school and most importantly, help us to stay safe and happy.
